Realm of God

Like many of you I’m feeling overwhelmed on a daily basis by the rhetoric of fear and hate we’re being fed by politicians and media outlets. What is happening to us and to our world? Even as I write these words I’m immediately reminded of the creation story in Genesis. God created out of scattered nothingness and even from chaos. So my faith in the power of God to change the world from chaotic to peaceful, from hateful to hopeful, always trumps, even tramples, my fear.

In the current political climate where presidential campaigns have been running for over a year already, you might have feelings ranging from exhausted and satisfied to overwhelmed and panicked and everywhere in-between. If you’re candidate is doing well, you’ll be happy. If you’re candidate isn’t doing well, you might despair. Some of my friends are even saying there are no good choices on November 8th. Unfortunately, not making a choice at all is the worst scenario. Despair can never be the last word.

I imagine Jesus being born into a despairing world where the wealthy were sucking the very life out of everyone else. What did he do? He built a ministry. He built a ministry of advocating for the hungry and the homeless. He built a ministry of healing the people living on the margins. Jesus built a ministry that looks like the realm of God.

Every time Jesus spoke a word of hope he started with the words, “don’t be afraid.” May our trust in a mightily loving God sustain us and lift us every day!

Shalom,
Pr. Barb

“Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. It is so sure and certain that a [person] could stake his [or her] life on it a thousand times.” Martin Luther
