The Birthday Gift

Well, it’s almost here… again. Winter and Christmas. As it happens when one matures into adulthood, it’s fascinating how quickly these two events happen… eachevery year. How can there be enough to say about these now routine, even mundane, life-cycles of a 2000+ year old Palestinian refugee?

That, to me, is the miracle! Whomever these gospel writers were, they certainly could tell a narrative so full of depth that it has kept us wondering, thinking, and arguing for centuries. And that takes me full circle into the mystery of maturity. The birthday gift is the birthday! The Christmas gift is God being birthed in each of us… again!

Despite concrete evidence to the contrary, “my heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn.” (lyrics to “Canticle of the Turning” by Rory Cooney; sung in church on 12/17)

Shalom, Pr. Barb

P.S. If you are travelling during the holidays, may the roads be snow free, the black-ice melt ahead of you, and family events be as stress-free as possible!
