Parish Nursing at Union Congregational UCC is a blend of nursing and ministry that addresses the needs of the whole person across their lifespan, within the context of this faith community.  Our parish nurse’s practice embraces seven functions:

+ Integrator of faith and health –Brings together aspects of faith and health, how they relate and impact one another.

+ Health educator-Seeks to promote an understanding of the relationship between life style, attitudes, faith and well-being.

+ Personal health counselor-Discusses health problems with congregants and makes home, hospital and nursing home visits as needed.

+ Referral agent-Makes referrals to community resources and services.

+ Trainer of volunteers-Recruits and trains volunteers with the congregation to support the health ministry.

+ Developer of support groups-Develops support groups to address specific needs of the congregation.

+ Health advocate-Serves as an advocate for health care needs for those who have no family or support people to assist them.  Also serves as an advocate of the community planning flu clinics, blood drives and pandemic planning.

Union’s nurse works as part of a team with the pastor, the Parish Nurse Committee, and volunteers from within the congregation.  After the nurse receives a referral, she contacts the congregant to assess the needs on a confidential basis and then decides with the congregant on a course of action.

Our parish nurse is a registered nurse with of Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing who has taken the International Parish Course offered by Concordia College (Moorhead). She has worked in health care for over 30 years. At Union UCC, she works ten hours a week mainly visiting in hospitals, nursing homes and private homes.  She is available for health screenings and blood pressures the third Sunday of each month after church.  She does not do hands on nursing but will help you find resources if you are in need of home care.

Here are the top ten reasons to call our Parish Nurse:

  1. If you would like a confidential listening ear regarding a health concern.
  2. If you are going in for surgery or a medical procedure and would like helpful information and/or emotional support.
  3. If you are being discharged from a health care facility or rehab and would like the nurse to sit in on your discharge conference and help you remember all the instructions and follow up.
  4. If you would like someone to accompany you to a doctor’s appointment and help listen and ask the right questions.
  1. If you are undergoing a life transition and feel overwhelmed.
  2. If you are experiencing grief or loss and would like someone to talk to about this.
  3. If you need to be connected to community resources but are unsure of where to turn.
  4. If you would like help filling out your advance directive and to discuss end of life care.
  5. If you are a caregiver and could use help finding resources for your loved one.
  6. If you would like the congregation to offer a class on a particular health topic.

Please feel call our parish nurse with any concerns or questions that you have.  There are no charges for her services.  Union Congregational UCCs’ Parish Nurse Ministry was supported in its inception in 2006 by the NORC program of Jewish Family and Children’s Service and was funded by the Administration of Aging. Any contributions to the church would be greatly appreciated to continue this special ministry.
