Baptism is one of two sacraments—communion is the other—we celebrate within the United Church of Christ. We practice infant baptism, recognize baptisms from other denominations, and perform youth and adult baptisms for those who've not previously been baptized. A baptism is usually conducted during worship because it is considered a covenantal action taken among the parents, the community of faith and God. Parents and members of the community of faith make promises concerning the child and his or her growth in faith. Parents promise to raise their child in the Christian faith, while the congregation promises to support the parents and to nurture the child in faith as well.
