Families Moving Forward provides temporary shelter and support for homeless families, who sleep and eat at each participating church for a week at a time. During the day, volunteers look after the children while the parents look for work or housing. Shirley Bachman coordinates the program for Union, which has been involved in the program since 2003. She remembers the very first family she met. “They had a newborn son—his name was Roger," Bachman says. "To hold that little baby and know he was homeless was a very humbling experience.” That made it all the more rewarding to learn that the family went on to find housing and is now thriving and happy. Volunteers are always needed to assist with the program, whether it's looking after the kids during the day, preparing meals, or staying overnight as the families sleep.
